LED Lighting and RETILAP: A Compliance Guide

LED luminaires are the most efficient option, but they must meet specific CRI, color temperature, and illumination level parameters under RETILAP.
1Why LED for RETILAP Compliance?
LED technology has become the standard for RETILAP compliance for multiple reasons: superior energy efficiency (over 100 lm/W), extended lifespan (50,000+ hours), precise control of light distribution, and dimming capability.
2Critical RETILAP Parameters for LED Luminaires
To comply with RETILAP, LED luminaires must meet: a Color Rendering Index (CRI) of 80 or higher for interior spaces, color temperature between 3000K and 4500K, and uniformity (Emin/Eavg ratio) no less than 0.4.
3Illumination Levels by Space Type
RETILAP establishes minimum levels: general offices 500 lux, reception 300 lux, hallways 200 lux, medical offices 1,000 lux, and surgical suites 10,000 lux. A lighting study verifying compliance with these values is essential.
4Emergency Lighting and Signage
RETILAP requires emergency lighting systems that guarantee minimum levels of 50 lux on evacuation routes. Emergency systems must have a minimum backup autonomy of 90 minutes.
5Common Implementation Mistakes
The most frequent mistakes include: selecting luminaires by power instead of luminous flux, ignoring the lumen depreciation factor, not accounting for glare (UGR) in visual workspaces, and omitting the uniformity study.
